The history of Czech settlers in Louisiana starts in the 1850's. The first record of Czech immigrants in Louisiana appeared in
New Orleans. It is not surprising that the first Czech immigrants arrived through New Orleans, being the largest port in south in the 1800's. The Czechs established there own little quarter known as Bohemia in the
greater New Orleans area.
The immigration of Czechs into Louisiana not only occurred in New Orleans, but also in the towns of Libuse and Kolin. These towns were established by Czech settlers in 1914 in the
attempt to create a Czech community for their families. These two communities are located a few miles east of Alexandria, in the central part of the state.
